Your different self

I’m different situation you will act differently to best suit that situation. This doesn’t mean that some of the selfs shown in those situation are fake. They all are your real self; it’s just us acting appropriately to the situation. For example, I say swear around my friends, but I do not say them in class. This is because when I’m with friends it’s a time for me to be relax and not worry about my speech. When it’s time for class, I must act like good student, which means no swearing. There will be similarities between the different self that one has. For example, I act similarly with my friends in the form of speech as I do with extended family members. The difference is the swear words that I use and how often I will use them. Another similarity would be how I act when in a job interview vs. how I act in class. I’m both I would behave, and try not to show any negative features about me. The difference is that in class I will slouch, and at times show a frown. While at an interview I would be smiling and try to seem bright and happy. I would also try keeping very still and sit straight up at all times. I’m the end we all have a variety of selfs that we us. They all are our real self; there is no one true self.

Why did you do that?

In the last week my professor had us do something strange outside the classroom. He had us walk around the floor we were currently on while doing simple commands. Those commands were looking at a wall, spinning, stopping, continue walking until this point, and touching the emergency phone box. After we returned to the classroom and to our seats he asked us why we did it. The more popular answer was that he was the teacher and we had to do what he said. That answer raises another question “why do we have to listen to him?” At the very beginning we are taught to listen to authority figure’s commands that are reasonable. For example, if the teacher told you to go stand outside you will do it, but you wouldn’t give him your money if commanded too. The real reason why the entire class did that exercise was because an authority figure gave us a reasonable command. If obedience wasn’t beaten into us from early childhood, maybe no one would have done it.

Why did you buy this?

My last actual purchase was a GameCube controller adapter for my Nintendo wiiu. I bought this item so I could use GameCube controllers while playing Super Smash Bros Wiiu edition. The reading behind me needing it is that a collect conscious about that controller being the best formed. I have older brothers who introduced me into gaming in the first place. They were also the ones who introduced me into the Super Smash Bros franchise. They started from Super Smash Bros for the Nintendo GameCube. This being there first Super Smash Bros game must have influenced them into preferring the GameCube controller. Since I was younger and preferably dumber then them I had trust in their choices. I know that’s being a sheep person but I had faith that their judgement was right. I have tried other controller but the GameCube controller has always turned out victorious.

Introducing Sociology Using The Stuff Of Everyday Life pages 109-140

This chapter is mainly about why we shop. There are multiple factors at play such as wanting to belong, individuality, bonding, and stress relevant. People will go shop to help relax or spend time bonding with friends or family. A teenager might go shopping to stay in trend to be in a group while still feeling like an individual. Some specifically go against mainstream for some individuality. Let’s say a 19 year old walks into any clothing store. That teen decides to go against what’s mainstream. For them to do that they would need to know what exactly is mainstream at the time. Let’s say pre-ripped clothing is currently mainstreamed. They might go out of their way simple to buy clothes that are pre-ripped to show individuality. I’m normally not one of them, but some people find it relaxing to go shopping. My mom seems to be one since she says that she enjoys it. The problem with her shopping is falling the store’s techniques. Over the ages the retail stores have come up with ways to make you buy more and more. At times they will have sales that seems good but aren’t, started putting items on permit display, and have a place to leave your distraction. I am not sure if it’s still in practice, but decades ago the stores had daycare. They had this service so you would be more prone to compulsively buy stuff. The same goes with adding deals and displaying items permanently. Some people, like my mom, fall for the deal technique to much. For her, she will see something on sale and get a lot of it even if we hadn’t tried it before. The problem with this is buying something not needed and running the risk of it being a waste. About 2 weeks ago my mom bought honey ketchup in placement of hienz. What happened was that the only people in the house who eat ketchup hate. Now the bottles just sit in the cupboard collecting dust while the store got the money for it.

Conforming

In life you will conform to something; be it a group of some kind or an authority figure. For me it was the authority of my household; it was my father. With him what ever he said goes, no one could go against him. He was the head since he was the father, and the sole breadwinner of the family. The problem with him as head is that he will be force with even the smallest of things. For example, I hand to accept that he was going to buy me t-shirts. Some might think “what’s so bad about him buying you shirts?” The problem was my lack of needing new shirts. I had button up shirts and I was quite happy with them. He noticed I didn’t have any t-shirts and decided to buy me some. I specifically told him that I was fine with my button ups and I didn’t need new shirts. He immediately said “What did I jut say? I told you I’m buying you shirts, I’m buying you shirts”. I went with it and got the new shirts to not wear. I highly prefer button up shirts to t-shirts nowadays, but still got some anyways. He got upset when I didn’t wear them and even acted like I asked for it. Normally when someone asks for something like new shirts and doesn’t wear them its okay to get mad. When you buy someone shirts that they told you not to and get mad at them, that’s wrong. He still doesn’t see how its wrong for him to get at me when I told him not to buy them. To this day I still have those shirts; that money could have been used to get me more button ups. There are 6 shirts that costs 6-8 dollars per shirt. My button ups normally cost 20 dollars per short (without tax). He could have at least bought me a new button up instead of wasting the money on the shirts. He thought it was a wise financial decision to forcefully buy me t-shirts that I told him I didn’t won’t. Because he is the authority of the house, I had to conform to him and get the stupid t-shirts.

Down To Earth Sociology pages 249-264

This chapter was about how morticians, embalmer’s, etc. take care of stigmatism. Their profession is stigmatized due to them working/profiting from the dead. In some cultures/societies, they can not touch the living since they touch the dead. They do take actions to help lower stigmatism against their profession. They may act, behave, or even speak in a specific way. For example, they will call the deceased either by their last name or as “loved one”. They refer to the room which the corpse is displayed as the “Eternal slumber room” among others. They may even dress/act specifically to go against the stereotypes that is associated with their profession. For example, if I was a mortician, I may not use words like corpse, death, and dead. I would dance my way around it will still being obvious of what I’m referring to. They believe that words like “death” makes it seem more morbid or depressing. They will also try putting the focus onto the services they provide for the living. Some of those services are funeral planning, and consolations.

This reminded me of when my grandfather died. He died in March of 2018. My mother was there helping take care of him and my grandmother when he was dying. Once dead, my mother had to help my grandmother with all the paperwork, funeral planning, and console her. The place that handled his departure from this world offered my grandmother consultation. She declined, but offered to help others who lost someone through the same service. She never heard back, but was willing to do it anytime.

Down To Earth Sociology 135-146

When you first meet someone you analyze them. You try to figure out what kind of person they are when doing so. Your clothes, hair cut, and even the facial expression you had right before talking to them can give clues. This is normally the case for someone who doesn’t know you. There’s still a chance for you to change their mind with a “first impression”. A “first impression” is your action/way of speaking when you first meet. Depending on what you do or say could make up their minds for them. There is a chance for someone to fool someone by behaving/speaking a way to choose for them. What this means is a person will try to make you think about them in a way they want. For example, I might my guy friends to think I get a lot of action. I could do this by having female friends call of the house in which we share. Letting it ring a bit before picking it up will make it easier for them to see. This could Make me seem like I’m good with the ladies. This doesn’t always work out; sometimes people can tell. For example, people in Shetland Isle have to enter a person’s house with a smile when coming over for tea. What people in Shetland do is look out the window to see their facial expressions before. Their guest might have an upset expression and change it to a smile right before coming in. This gives them a good view that person feels about them.

Introducing Sociology Using The Stuff Of Everyday Life chapter 10

This chapter covers social self and identity. From the very beginning I was told by my mom that everyone was unique. According to this chapter, people show that uniqueness through material things. For example, I would say that I am an Apple guy when it comes to phone. The thing that I use to make me unique puts me in a group. The fact is that there are tons of people who do that/have that material thing. This that forms a social group. A Chevy guy is placed on the Chevy guy group, will a Apple guy is placed in the Apple group. That doesn’t mean that there is no “self”. You sense of self comes from your social surroundings. The problem is defining what “self” really is. There three theories: looking-glass, generalized other, and dramaturgical theory. The looking glass theory describes self as how you think people see you. For example, I might think people see me as a weird guy because I like anime, or manga. While generalized other describes “self” has how you are perceived through other’s point of view. For example, if a hot woman walked over you might start thinking why she did. According to this theory, you would think in her point of view. She might of saw how handsome you are and that you are very attracting, or that you alone and need someone. Well dramaturgical theory states how you act in a social setting. For example, you will act different in the work place then you do home or with friends. Identity is how you perceived in society. There are many factors that determined that like age, sexuality, gender, race, or occupation. For me, I would be seen as a student but, I can also been seen as an African American. You can have many identity and they can be influenced by good or bad traits.

Coffee Shop

I went down to the Starbucks on W March Lane. When I got there I found the drive-thru to be quite busy. Before I entered, I expected to see a lot of young customers in the store. When I enter I was very shocked to see a lot of older people. Normally my generation is all about Starbucks, to a stereotypical point. I went and ordered a Iced peach green tea with little sweetener. I sat down with my drink and observed my new surroundings. From the looks of it, all the customers currently at the shop were middle to lower middle class. Including me, the gender ratio was balanced at 3 women, 3 men. Not so surprising, there were a lot of white customers. There were two Asians, and later on a few black people came in. The customers were normally wearing a T-shirt, or something equivalent, and pants of some kind. There were a few customers who came in real quick that were in business attire. They quickly got there drink and left. Another thing that surprised was that no one was taking at first. Almost the entire time I was there no one said anything except for “try this”. It surprised me since it was the older generation customers who were glued to their phones. I was able to see what two customers were playing. It was some mobile app on their phones. Two other customers were in there laptops with some kind of listening equipment. One customers seemed to be a student doing class/homework while drinking a regular cup of coffee. It was not until the end when a pair of friends came in talking. It was a old black and a old white women who seemed very friendly. For the most part they were talking about their feelings towards friends and about an upcoming birthday. I left not soon after they got their order of coffee and cherry muffin.

Down To Earth Sociology pages 63-72

Prison is a institution for criminals to be taken out fo society and possibly reformed. The problem with reforming prisoners is what to do with them. What happens to reformed prisoners is being released back into society. Great! But, what do they do now? When someone has a criminal record they have a harder time finding a job. What happens is that the employers look for quick ways to go through a application. A decent amount will immediately reject you if they see that you were in prison. Another problem with finding a job is being African American. There is still racial discrimination going on which results in rejection. They believe the stereotypes that were passed down. In the book “Down To Earth Sociology” they reported that in a non con blacks to have a harder time then con whites. In general, having a criminal background is normally a barrier when trying to get a job. Race can also have an impact on your rejection/acceptance.
