This chapter is about the problems with and within prison. A prison is suppose to be a place where someone who is deemed as a “criminal” goes for rehabilitation. The problem is within the prison, where prisoners are abused. What happens is that the guards will establish their own rules along with the state’s. They create bazaar and unusual punishments like defecating on the floor. The reason the guards abuse prisoners is that they themselves are oppressed. Normally in life you are oppressed in someway;from a parental figure to a boss. Psychologists believe that oppressed guards let out their frustrations on the prisoners. To fix the prisons you will need to properly train the guards, change the rehabilitation method, and change the attitude toward prison. The prisoners will also need someone not tied to the prison to observer and report any misconduct from the guards. The prisoners need a way to be rehabilitated back into society; potentially given a job. People see ex-convicts as animals that need to be relocated up. If the elite started seeing them as human again, the lower classes will follow. I can’t remember the show, but the show has real innocent people go into prison for 39 days. They do so to see how the prison turkey is on the inside.
