This chapter covers social self and identity. From the very beginning I was told by my mom that everyone was unique. According to this chapter, people show that uniqueness through material things. For example, I would say that I am an Apple guy when it comes to phone. The thing that I use to make me unique puts me in a group. The fact is that there are tons of people who do that/have that material thing. This that forms a social group. A Chevy guy is placed on the Chevy guy group, will a Apple guy is placed in the Apple group. That doesn’t mean that there is no “self”. You sense of self comes from your social surroundings. The problem is defining what “self” really is. There three theories: looking-glass, generalized other, and dramaturgical theory. The looking glass theory describes self as how you think people see you. For example, I might think people see me as a weird guy because I like anime, or manga. While generalized other describes “self” has how you are perceived through other’s point of view. For example, if a hot woman walked over you might start thinking why she did. According to this theory, you would think in her point of view. She might of saw how handsome you are and that you are very attracting, or that you alone and need someone. Well dramaturgical theory states how you act in a social setting. For example, you will act different in the work place then you do home or with friends. Identity is how you perceived in society. There are many factors that determined that like age, sexuality, gender, race, or occupation. For me, I would be seen as a student but, I can also been seen as an African American. You can have many identity and they can be influenced by good or bad traits.
